In July 2008, former Daneford Trust volunteers came together in collaboration with the Thuthuka Street Children’s Organisation in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Children from three agencies, Streets Ahead drop-in centre (Harare), Chiedza (Masvingo) and Thuthuka (Bulawayo) travelled together with their workers to the Victoria Falls Road site for a week of workshops.
This footage, though slightly grainy, gives a glimpse of that memorable final day and includes mbira musicians and Grassroots Theatre Company. This was during a time when Zimbabwe was undergoing a lot of economic and political instability. The children and young people debated, shared unique experiences which they expressed through improvisation.
Grassroots Theatre were an influential theatre for development group who visited many towns in the UK to excite children and adult audiences in schools, prisons and other community venues. Sadly some of their performers have passed away, noting Siza Moyo and their co-founder Ephson Ngadya.
The film concludes with a short Q and A with the facilitators, Ivor Kasongo, Gift Petro and James Robinson.
